t.Catherine's House records in London show that Grace's birth at Upton, Berkshire, England was noted in the December 1838 quarter, parish of Newbury (ref 2 229). The Berkshire Record Office states that she was baptised on 26 November 1838.  Grace was the daughter of Joseph Humfrey and Martha Lowsley, and married Henry Euean Rumble. She and Henry had eleven children. Grace died on 16 January 1894 and was buried at Eastbourne, England on 19 January.

ane was the daughter of Thomas Rumble and Frances Mary de Brotherton. Her exact date of birth is not known, but she was baptised at St Pancras Church, London, on 13 November, 1829, along with her brother John and her sister Louisa. The June 1841 census showed her age as 12, and the March 1851 census, as 21. Thus, she was probably born between March and June 1829. The 7 April 1861 census record stated that she was 25 years of age, which would put her birth at 1836 - but it is likely that she then lied about her age.

Jane married Henry Webb  probably in 18651. Dorothy Fall2 stated that they had a child, Harry, and possibly others. Nothing else is known.

The entry in the Index of Wills for her sister Louisa stated that in 1877 Jane was living in London Road, Croydon.

homas, the son of Thomas Rumble and Frances de Brotherton was born on 26 December 1832 and baptised in Great Marlow New Church on 12 August 1835. His marriage was solemnised in the parish church of St. Martin's in the Field in the county of Middlesex, England, on 10 February 18531.  On the marriage certificate he is described as an engineer living in Villiers Street2. Thomas married Lydia Mary Spicer, of Barking, Essex. Her father, John Spicer, was described by profession as "Smith."  Dorothy Fall3 stated that he had four or five children, both boys and girls, but no details are known. It also appears that he married  a second time4.

The entry in the index of wills states:

Rumble Thomas William - The Will of Thomas William Rumble formerly of the Cottage East Hill Wandsworth but late of Hawthorne House Upper-Richmond Road Putney both in the County of Surrey Civil Engineer who died 21 April 1883 at Sunnyside Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight was proved at the Principal Registry by Elizabeth Rumble Widow the Relict and Emily Beatrice Rumble spinster daughter both of Hawthorne House aforesaid two of the executors.

2 There is an implicit assumption that the will obtained for Thomas William Rumble refers to the same Thomas William Rumble as in the marriage certificate for Lydia Spicer. The profession of Civil Engineer is correct.

homas appears to have married for the second time. His Will1 refers to his wife as "Elizabeth Rumble," whereas his 1853 marriage certificate names his wife as Lydia Mary. His Will also mentions a daughter "Emily Beatrice Rumble Rumble." but it is not known whether this is a child by the first or second marriage. The Will implies other children, but they are not named.

The International Genealogy Index lists a marriage between Thomas William Rumble and Sarah Elizabeth Hoare on 2 April 1877, Bethnall Green2.

t was originally thought that Louisa was the daughter of Thomas Rumble & Frances Mary de Brotherton, and that she became blind and deaf, and never married1.

Deduction from the 1841 and 1851 census records indicates that she was born between March and June 1826. (However the census record of 7 April 1861 states her age as 27 years, which would put her birth in 1834. It is likely that in 1861 she lied about her age as this does not tally with her baptism at St. Pancras church, London on 13 November 1829. As Thomas Rumble and Frances de Brotherton did not marry until March 1828, it is possible that Louisa was a daughter of Thomas by his first marriage. However, she was buried in the same grave at Reading cemetery as Thomas Rumble and Frances Mary Brotherton.

Louisa died at Croydon on 18 July 18772.

The entry in the Index of Wills states:

Anthony's Will

nthony, the fifth child of Valentine & Elizabeth Knight was born in London on 24 October, 1831. On 1 August 1861 he married Letitia Hochee, at Lingfield, England. He died on 25 May 1912.

The London Records Office1  lists Letitia and Anthony's marriage listed twice, as follows:

[1] Marylebone Parish October-December quarter 1860, Reference 1a 642

[2] East Grinstead Parish July-September quarter 1861 Reference 2b 149.

We do not know the reason for the two records. Sydney Poole Lowdell2 had a substantial home with a private chapel at East Grinstead. It is possible that they were married legally in 1860, and followed this with a family wedding in the private family chapel, so it was recorded again in E.Grinstead. This is merely conjecture.

Anthony and Letitia had six children: Valentine Elphinstone, Fred, Kate Rosaline, Henry St.John, Mary and Churchill.

In 1989, Brenda Rohl visited Anthony's grave at Charlton cemetery, Greenwich, England. She stated:

The grave has three people and looks quite expensive (it's made of mottled brown marble with a large square cross, total height 6 feet) 'Valentine Elphinstone Knight, B.22/11/1862, D. 12/3/1904', 'Anthony Knight B.24/10/1831, D.25/5/1912. Perfect Love Casteth out fear', 'Letitia Charlotte Knight, B.15/10/1834, D. 9/7/1920'.

A small marble cross with "from Katie"3 written on, was on the plinth. The cross appears to have been moved4 for the addition of Anthony's name and again for Letitia.

A nearby grave also contained Knights, I'm not sure if they are related: 'Thomas John Knight, D.5/2/1901 aged 38 yrs.', 'Alice Maude Knight, D.31/12/1901 aged 8 months , infant daughter of the above', 'Elizabeth Amy Knight, D.6/4/1922 aged 59 years, wife of the above.

Dorothy Fall5 stated that Anthony was a wealthy man, who "dabbled on the Stock Exchange" and travelled abroad. Henry St.John Knight6 wrote to Kate Rosaline Rumble  in 1920 stating that, following the death of Letitia, a number of dates were found in an old diary concerning Anthony and his family. He listed these as follows:

5.12.61: (Anthony & Letitia) left England for New Zealand per "Victoria" - sailing ship 600 tons; 30.3.62: Arrived New Zealand; 8.3.69: Left New Zealand for England per "Gothenberg" for Melbourne & "City of Vienna" from Melbourne; 26.7.69: Arrived in England and went to Leatherhead; 23.2.74: K & H went to Miss Nicholson's school at Ryde; 3.8.75: K went to Miss ??? school at Arundel & H to Miss Randalls; 16.1.94: Mrs Rumble died; 10.3.95: Elizabeth Knight died.

He then wrote:

I find the places we went to before settling down at Blackheath are as follows: 1869 - Leatherhead, Cavendish (s???) & Hastings. 1870 - Clevedon. 1871 - Ross & Worthing. 1872 - Harefield & Malvern. 1873 - Bournemouth. 1874 - Ryde and (Stokes?) Bay. 1875 - Arundel, Worthing & Hastings. 1876 - Hawkhurst & Sandgate. 1878 - St.Leonards, Sandgate & Folkestone. 1879 - Dover, Ashford & Eastbourne. 16.2.82 -Lawn Terrace, Blackheath. 21.6.82 - No.2 Vanbrugh Terrace (Blackheath).

Anthony and Letitia lived at Vanbrugh Terrace until their deaths. The 1881 census showed that at that time Anthony and Letitia were living at 28 Hyde Gardens, Eastbourne. This was presumably  a lodging house as the entry reads:

28 Hyde Gardens: Emma J.Dow, aged 63, Head of family (Lodging House Keeper), Lydia M.Hemming, aged 53, Boarder, Jane Johnson, aged 19,(Housemaid,domestic).

Also at the same address:

Anthony Knight, Head of Family, aged 49, (Solicitor), Letitia, aged 46, (Wife), Mary G, aged 9, (Scholar), Churchill, aged 2, Elizabeth Wate, aged 26, nurse domestic.

The Will of Anthony Knight, 1912, reads:

I give, devise and bequeath unto my dear wife Letitia Charlotte all I have in the world and direct all monies to be paid to her receipt only I appoint my said dear wife Letitia Charlotte and my brother-in-law John Elphinstone Milton - executrix and executor of this my will dated 3rd August 1877 at Gills Green, Hawkhurst in the County of Kent. Anthony Knight.

On the 19 day of June 1912 Probate of the will was granted to Letitia Charlotte Knight the surviving executor.

Letitia's daughter Kate (14004F) has an entry in her diary for 15 October 1913 stating it to be her mother's 78th birthday, which would give her birth year as 1835. etitia, the daughter of John Hochee from China and an English girl, Charlotte Mole, was born on 15 October 18341.  She married Anthony Knight at Lingfield on 1 August 1861 and died on 9 July 1920. With her husband and eldest son, she is buried at Charlton Cemetery, Greenwich, England. Dorothy Fall2 said that she had thirteen children, but brought up six.

When Letitia died she was living at the family home at No.2 Vanbrugh Terrace, Blackheath, London. She left an estate valued at ,11,576.8.5d , of which Kate Rosaline Rumble's share3 was ,1,692.9.3d.  Henry St.John Knight4  wrote to his sister Kate in 1920, stating:

The legacies left in Mother's will have been paid consisting of ,500 to Jennie5, ,100 to Lottie Rumble6, ,50 to each of the two servants and ,30 to Flo Hochee7, and now the balance is on the point of being distributed.  Yours will be in cash amounting, as far as I can remember, to about ,1,700, whilst Fred8, Mary9, Church10 and myself are taking ours principally in securities (as?) ames, the son of John Hochee & Charlotte Mole, was born at Lingfield, Surrey, in 1832.  He became a medical practitioner and practised in Finchley, England. He died1 on 7 December 1896.  His death was mentioned in a letter written to Kate Rumble2 by her brother  Henry St.John3 in 1897:

"Uncle James Hochee died at Finchley at the end of 1896."

What  little we know of James is gleaned from census records.

The 2 April 1871 census showed that James Hochee was then 38 years of age and  living in East End Road, Finchley, a Northern suburb of London. He was

described as a General Practitioner, a member and licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries, London. The persons present in his house that night were:

His wife, Emma (38); his children, John E.J.(5), Rose E. (4), Ada O.E. (3) and Alice M.E. (1) . In addition there was Sarah Wards (18 - nurse domestic), Mary Wards (15 - under-nurse, domestic), Elizabeth A. Foster (19 - General servant) and William J.A. White (21 -coachman).

The 3 April 1881 census for East End House, East End Road, Finchley (RG 11, 1371, 57, page 5 & 7) showed the occupants as:

James Hochee, Head, Married, Aged 48, GP; Emma Hochee, Wife, Married aged 48; Elizabeth C.Smith, Boarder, Unmarried, aged 19, Daughter of Carpet Manufacturer; Mary Ann E. Bennett, Patient, Unmarried, aged 38, Daughter of Clergyman, Lunatic; Mary Ann Flora(?), servant, unmarried, aged 23, cook; Rosa J. Johnson, servant, unmarried, aged 16, housemaid; Maria Linton, Nurse, unmarried, aged 27, Mental Nurse. At East End House Stables there was Thomas Stubbs, servant, unmarried, aged 17, groom.

Five of his children at the time of the 1881 census were at Prospect House, East End Road, Finchley5.

The London Records office states that his marriage to Emma Fry was registered in the parish of Reigate for the July - September quarter 1864, Reference 2a 210.

The birth certificate of his daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Emma, born in 1871,  confirms him as a Surgeon living at East End Finchley.

The entry in the Index of Wills states:

She also appeared in the 1871 census for the household of James Hochee at East End Rd. Finchley. Emma died at Tunbridge Wells on 13th February 1904. The entry in the Index of Wills states:

003A  13   009A  M  HOCHEE             JOHN ELPHINSTONE FATQUA    SINGLE          (1828)

ohn Elphinstone Fatqua Hochee was the third child of John Hochee and Charlotte Mole. He was born in 1828, as determined both from the 3 April, 1881 census, and from his death certificate.

He remained single

Joined the Army

Changed his name

to MILTON

He was at the family farm, Nortons, Lingfield, during the 1881 census

He did not marry but joined the army, changing his surname to MILTON.    The 1881 Census showed that he was residing at Nortons, Lingfield, the occupants of the house being:

Charlotte Hochee (his mother) aged 75; John E.Milton (son) aged 52 and a retired senior officer in the army;  Julia Nigsworth(?) age 35, servant and cook; Eliza Steadman, aged 27, Housemaid; George Hutchins, aged 17, Gardener; Charlotte Anderson aged 40, Nurse; and Ellen  Burley(?) Kitchenmaid.

He died at age 54 through blood poisoning following and operation for removal of stones from the Bladder.

He hurriedly made a Will, leaving everything to his brother James. (13008M)

John died at 33 Wimpole Street, Cavendish Square on 22 April 1883. It is possible that he took ill suddenly as his last Will and Testament is dated  three days before his death. The will is very short. In effect he says, "I give everything to my brother James." One of the witnesses to the will was Elizabeth Cooper, also of 33 Wimpole Street. It is possible that the solicitor was summoned to his death-bed for the purpose of making the Will - the truth we will never know. The index from the English Civil Registration from 1837 shows his death recorded in the parish of Marylebone for the June 1883 quarter, Reference 1a 384.

Death certificate

details

His death certificate for the district of Marylebone, sub district of Cavendish Square in the County of Middlesex, states that he died on 22 April 1883, at 33 Wimpole Street, being 54 years of age. His occupation was given as "Gentleman." The cause of death, "Stone in the bladder - some years. Lithotomy. Pyremia 7 days."

The cause of death

Lithotomy is the operation for the surgical removal of stones from the bladder.  Pyremia is a form of blood poisoning, similar to septicćmia. This would support the idea that, being operated on for the removal of bladder stones, infection set in, so his will was made quickly when it became evident that he was dying. His brother James was present at the death.

mma was the second child and first daughter of the Rev. Edward & Mary Fall. Her father's bible records:

Emma Fall daughter of Edward & Mary Fall was born between eleven and twelve of the clock Saturday Janry 5th 1811. (She) was married at Newbold Church by Ebeneza Broughton Leigh on April 12th 1852 to Mr Joseph Majury of Farmouth. It is interesting to note that Emma was the eldest of five sisters. She did not marry until she was 41 years of age, and none of her sisters married before her. Could this be a case where no daughter was permitted to marry until the eldest married?1

We do not know when Emma died. It is presumed that there were no children.

I have stayed at their home in East Grinstead, and it was certainly a lovely place with its own chapel." Kate Knight4 refers in her diaries to "Uncle Sydney."

He gave money to the China Inland Mission, to the Earlwood Asylum, the Pakhai Leper Hospital and the East Grinstead Cottage Hospital.

He left ,2,500 to Letitia Knight6, which was divided amongst her surviving children as Letitia died two years before Sydney. He left ,2,500 to Mary Knight7 the daughter of Ann Pocock. His nephew Charles Lowdell8 received a legacy of ,5,000 while Sydney James Lowdell's9 children received ,200 each and a one fifth share in his residuary estate.

He made small bequests to his housemaid, gardener, cook, farm hand, servant and cowhand and to the vergeress of the Baldwins church.

He owned two dwelling-houses. That at 38 Norfolk Square Brighton he bequeathed to his niece Mary Henrietta Lowdell10, while his main Baldwin property and farm lands went to his nephew William Thorold Lowdell11.

enrietta, or Netta as she was known within the family, the second child of John Hochee and Charlotte Mole, was born in England in 1826. She married Sydney Poole Lowdell in 1866 and died on 14 March 1911. Kate Rumble's1  diary in January 1912 states:

Received a parcel from my mother containing present for myself and the girls from Aunt Netta's belongings that her husband was dividing around the relations.

The abstract of her will which states:

LOWDELL Henrietta of Baldwins, East Grinstead, Surrey (Wife of Sydney Poole Lowdell) died 14 March 1911. ADMIN to Sydney Poole Lowdell Gentleman. Effects ,100.

Her death is recorded in the parish of Godstone for the March 1911 quarter, 2a 174. Her age at death is recorded as 85.   Her husband Sydney Poole Lowdell in his will left all his estate to nephews and nieces which would be consistent with he and Henrietta having no children of their own.

ittle is known of Mr Turrell, the father of Susie. As a young girl in her twenties, Susie married Henry St.John Knight1.  Henry's son Anton2  did not approve of this marriage of his father to someone of a lower class, whom he thought was after his money. Anton described her father as a "Wheel Tapper" by trade. "Very estimable and God-fearing people, no doubt, but not really the class into which one would wish to marry."3
